The Spanish passion for living is deliciously contagious.

Spain is all about Mediterranean beaches, sangria, sun and paella.  Or is it?  Indeed southern Spain has been a popular place for tourists over the years but now it seems the fascination of other parts of Spain is increasing.

Once you are away from the holiday Costas, you could only ever really be in Spain, where the cities boast narrow winding streets with beautiful architecture rather than the blaring discos bars that we generally associate with Spain.  Along with the fantastic climate, relaxing Spanish atmosphere and food and drink served to order.

When to go

Spain is enjoyable any time of the year.  Obviously the ideal months are from May through to September (although April to October in the southern regions).   At these times you are almost guaranteed great weather but remember July and August can be extremely hot.  Winter along the southern and southeastern Mediterranean coasts is mild, while in the height of summer you can retreat to the northwest, to beaches or high mountains anywhere to escape the excessive heat.

Costa Blanca

The Costa Blanca is the coastline that stretched 170miles along Spain’s east coast centred on Alicante and running from Valencia in the north to La Manga in the South.  It is famous for the resort of Benidorm which has a unique reputation for a family resort.  The countryside at the north end of the Costa Blanca is attractively mountainous and rocky.  All the resorts have plenty to offer for tourists and have a wide range of accommodation both near the beach and rising up the hillside.

The area is very close to Alicante airport.  Alicante is a holiday resort in itself and offers a wonderful city with great shopping.  Just south of the airport lies the resort of Torrevieja with its sandy beach and lively market, several golf courses and wonderful accommodation.

Inland from the beaches lies one of Spain’s most fertile areas, well known for the citrus trees that supply fruit worldwide, almond trees that blanket the ground with rich blossom and date palms in massive forests.

The Costa Blanca is one of those resorts where everyone can find their place in the sun, from cosmopolitan towns where life goes on 24 hours a day to sleepy little villages where the peace and tranquillity is unique.

Javea

Javea is situated on the east coast of Spain approximately 100km from Valencia and 90km from Alicante, both having easy access to very busy airports and motorways.

This beautiful and magical town is also within easy reach of many other attractive areas such as Altea, the inland village of Jalon with its Saturday flea-market and the popular Benidorm.

There are three main areas of Javea.  The old town, where it is a maze of pretty narrow streets, the Port, a busy fishing port where you can relish the fresh fish on offer in local restaurants or local bars, and lastly the Arenal which is the main tourist area with its long sandy beach planted with palm trees and a busy promenade of bars and restaurants, serving local traditional dishes.

Denia

Denia is very much a family resort.  A quiet little town that was once the centre of the regions raisin growing industry, although tourism has now taken over the raisins are still grown there and remain the local delicacy.  The main avenue into Denia is the Plaza de la Constitucion where you can sit and watch the world go by.   It also boasts an impressive working fishing fleet and fresh fish.

Denia has 20km of beaches to enjoy, although some are covered in pebbles.  There are also small, rocky covers which are ideal for diving.  The climate is mil and the average daily temperature is 19 degrees. The whole area of Denia is dominated by orange and lemon groves and has a scattering of Roman and Islamic ruin sites.

Costa Calida

The Costa Calida extends along 250km from the beach of Carolina in Aguilas, a few kilometres from the province of Almeria, to the beach at El Mojon on the boundary with Alicante.  This stretch of Murcian coastline is blessed with 315 days of sunshine a year and an average temperature of 17 degrees.  The area offers a diverse selection of activities for the visitor including all manner of water sports, hiking, hill climbing and much more.
